The Danish Court (Lier)

Belgium / Antwerpen / Lier / Kardinaal Mercierplein, 8
house, mansion / manor house / villa, listed building / architectural heritage, 16th century construction

The Danish Gate with “Hof van Denemarken” behind it reminds us of King Christian II of Denmark, brother-in-law of Emperor Charles. In 1524 he came to Lier as an exile and stayed there until 1530. He got on well with the people of Lier and was known as the “red king”. Because of his part in the Stockholm bloodbath he is known in Sweden as Christian the Tyrant.
