The hangman who carried out the sentences at the
"Bloody Assizes" is supposed to have lived here.
Legend has it that a tunnel ran from the cottage to the prison which could well be true as Dorchester sports a large subterranean tunnel system.

  • Hello, Having seen this picture of Hangmans Cottage,Dorchester has brought back so many memories for me. My Great Grandparents lived here in the late 1800s & early 1900s. My Dad used to walk to see his Grandparents everyday as a lad along the river from his home at Friary Cottage. I WOULD LOVE TO FIND OUT ANY MORE INFORMATION ON THE PLACE.
