This is the Crown Point Mill, which was built in 1935 to process ore from the Crown Point Mine, the entrance to the mine is located on the hillside behind the mill. It is the only in-tact Depression Era mill on the Comstock Lode. It is a counter-current decantation cyanide mill, rated at 125 tons per day. It was built with a loan from the federal government- the loan amount was $160,000 ($100K to build the mill, and $60K to re-route the railroad tracks and take down the Crown Point Trestle, as they were planning to mine directly underneath it). This loan was paid back from the proceeds of the mining operation in less than 3 years. The Crown Point Mine of the 1930's was shut down during WWII, and never re-opened. The mill was refurbished in the late 1980's, but has not produced gold or silver since 1942. The original shaft of the Crown Point Mine (through which the Crown Point Bonanza was discovered in the 1870's) lies about a hundred feet north of the current mill building.
