The ancestral estate of William Floyd (b.1734), the Suffolk County signer of the Declaration of Independence, and American Revolutionary War General. The estate was managed by 8 generations of Floyds from 1718 to 1976. In colonial times, the Floyds ran a huge plantation; later, they turned to business and politics, and the lands were used for outdoor recreational pursuits like hunting and fishing, like many of the later estates in the area.
The estate includes the 25-room main house, the twelve outbuildings, the family cemetery and the 613 acres of forest, fields, marsh and trails. Estate donated to Fire Island National Seashore, National Park Service in 1965 where it is used as a museum.
