Mt Erebus (3794 metres), on Ross Island, Ross Dependency (New Zealand), is the world's southernmost active volcano and the only one known to exist in Antarctica. It is infamous as the site of New Zealand's worst air disaster when flight 901 crashed into the mountain in 1979, killing all 257 on board.
