Alachua is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. According to 2006 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the city's population was 7,554. Alachua was established in 1884 on a railroad line, after the railroad had bypassed nearby Newnansville. Alachua got a post office in 1887 and was incorporated as a city on 12 April 1905.

Name of the county is spelled the same way. However, many residents of the area vary the pronunciation of the town: It is spoken as "ah-la(t)ch-you-AY" for the city (long-A ending), and "ah-la(t)ch-you-AH" when referring to the county name (short-A ending). The meaning of Alachua is said to be an Indian word for "large sinkhole", due to the presence of Paynes Prairie (to the south).
