In the 15th century, the city of Leuven ordered construction of the Tafelrond (Round Table) building as a meeting place for burghers, guilds, drama societies, etc. The Tafelrond that stands today is not the original, which was torn down in about 1817, but a nearly identical replica built in 1921 for the Belgian National Bank. The bank's Leuven branch occupied the building until 2002.
In 2005, Jan Callewaert, founder of Leuven high-tech company Option N.V., bought the Tafelrond for 6.4 million euros. As of late 2007, the building's use has yet to be determined.
