Started years ago as "Hatoff's Texaco," located next to the old Forest Hills Elevated T Stop, this station has long had a reputation for low prices and refusal to accept credit or debit cards, arguably contributing to the former. This station has not been affiliated with Texaco or, indeed, any major oil company for at least the past 15-20 years. Stan Hatoff, the station's owner, has been famous for saying that "gas is gas," refuting claims that the big oil companies' additives are somehow better for one's engine. An anecdotal story, from around 1987 or 1988: A friend of mine and I stopped at Hatoff's for gas. The friend asked where the bathrooms were. The cashier asked, nonchantly, one number or two. The friend sheepishly said he had to pee. "You can go against the wall at the back of the building, nobody will notice!" Perhaps the lack of toilets also contributes to Hatoff's relatively low prices.
