In 1926 the United Arbeiter Temple Association, an umbrella group for Detroit's numerous German-American societies, built this impressive, classically-inspired building on the northern edge of the Indian Village neighborhood. It featured an auditorium/ballroom with a seating capacity of 1600. There were also smaller-capacity meeting rooms, a bowling alley and a billiard room. The architects for the building were the father-and-son team of Louis and Paul Kamper. There are rumors that the Deutsches Haus was a speakeasy during Prohibition.
Originally formed in 1917, the congregation moved to this building in 1962. The 29,000 sq. ft. building is presently for sale.
