Construction ordered by Prince Dmirti Donskoy in 1379 after victory of the Russians over the Golden Orda army at the river of Vozha. According to some sources, in 1392 famous artist Theofan the Greek took part in painting frescows in the interior. In 1672, the cathedral was taken down and then rebuilt. Closed in 1929, in 1989 it was given back to the Church. In 1999, it was restored and re-sanctified.
