The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center is located in the old 1816 Town Hall and Market House. The upper levels of the building housed the City Hall and the lowest level housed the old open air market house. Today you can still see large meat hooks down there. Inside exhibits relating to the history of the Fredericksburg area from its founding through to present day. The exhibits change every few months, so no two visits are likely to be the same. Inside you can expect to see relics from thousands of years ago, to the Civil War, to more current items from around the area. In 1824, they threw Lafayette (key to the Revolutionary victory almost 50 years earlier) a big wingding in the assembly room. The hall was used as the Union barracks and hospital in the latter part of the Civil War. They have since done some tall renovations on the building and the old town square in the back.
