Pontiac Mall was built on this site in 1963. It was later renamed Summit Place Mall. After a large expansion around 1990, giving it a long, twisting floorplan with no less than five department stores (plus Service Merchandise), it started suffering after Great Lakes Crossing opened. Montgomery Ward closed in 2001 and the mall went downhill as renovation plans fizzled out, and it closed permanently in 2009. The Macy's and JCPenney anchor stores closed in 2010, while Sears, the mall's last tenant, closed in 2014. The mall was demolished in 2019. It is set for redevelopment, excluding the site of the former Sears anchor store at the north end, which is independently owned.
