The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built west from Chicago to the Mississippi River during the 1850s. The route included this tunnel, one of 5 on the railroad. The Rock Island later on built a second parallel line just to the south, and the tunnel is no longer used. The other 4 tunnels on the railroad were between St. Louis and Kansas City, at Freeburg, Argyle, Eugene and Vale, none of which are currently in use. The CRI&P shut down at the end of March 1980, and the rail line past this former tunnel now belongs to the Iowa Interstate Railroad. Throughout the state of Illinois, 8 railroad tunnels were built, of which 4 are still in use.
