It all began with the establishment of three schools; Xiu Qi School in 1913, Chen Hua School in 1921, and Li Qun School in 1926. In 1937, the three schools were merged and named Hua Lian Public School, with Mr. Chin Tien Fang as its first headmaster. However, not long after that, in 1941, the Japanese invaded Malaya. Taiping was overrun with Japanese soldiers, and the school was closed. During the Japanese Occupation, some of the classrooms were used as torture chambers. The school re-opened on 12 November 1945 at the end of World War II.
