Douglas Wright Engineering Building, Department of Chemical Engineering & Civil Engineering Labs

This was the first building built on the University of Waterloo campus. The three storey building was designed by Shore, Moffat and Partners and opened in 1958 as a home to chemistry and chemical engineering. The C wing was added later.

The building formerly known as Engineering 1 was named after Douglas T Wright in 1998. Wright, a civil engineer who was the University's first Dean of Engineering helped to found the faculty's first co-operative programs. As President and Vice-Chancellor of the University (1981-1993) he aggressively pursued closer links between the university and industry. He is known as the godfather of the high tech sector in Waterloo.
