Lakki

Greece / Dodekanisos / Lakkion /

The town of Lakki (formerly Portolago) on the island of Leros, represents one of the most interesting urban planning and architectural projects, a prime example of reconstruction of the city from the outset, styled as an internationally known Italian rationalism. Here the architects and Urbanists Bernabiti Armando and Rodolfo Petracco have created a city from scratch unique worldwide. The symbolism of shapes with exemplary efficiency is reflected in the buildings of Lakki: the administration building, the metaphysical tower market, cinema, theater, the Hotel Roma (now Hotel Leros), the hospital. The church of St. Francis (now St. Nickolas) by the Italian architect A. Bernabiti with clear symmetrical construction, the structure balanced, bell central indispensable, each cover is a mere ornament and intentionally left out, here are certainly Art Deco, all are fine examples of architectural rationalism. It is the duty of Lerians to preserve and highlight the Lakki uniqueness for rest of the world.
It is the largest natural harbour in Greece, 4 Km away from the capital Platanos and it looks like a lake as it only has 400 meters opening. The view of Porto Lakko changed after the Italian rule in 1923 and as a result of that, new large buildings were built and wide and well paved roads were constructed. For swimming, Koulouki is the nearest beach.
Near the waterfront there is a monument to those who perished in 1943 when a Greek ship, Queen Olga was attached by German planes and sank in Porto Lagko's harbour.
