This is a Secondary School specializing in music named for the Gnessins. The Gnessins were a remarkable family, consisting of five sisters and one brother. Elena, Olga, Maria and Evgenya were pianists; Elizaveta was a violinist, and Mikhail Gnessin was a composer.

This secondary school is more than 60 years old. This is one of the most respected musical institutions in the country. Gnessin School teaches gifted children from 5 to 17 years (today only a few such Russian high schools offer such specialized instruction). Among the graduates of Gnessin school are Evgeny Kissin, Aram Khachaturian, Lev Oborin, Victor Pikayzen, Natalia Shahovskaya, David Tukhmanov.
