The falls cascaded over a large cliff and eventually cut deeper into one end,until finally it had eroded deep enough that the river by-passed the original cascade all together. This is evident by the zig-zag course of the Zambezi down-stream of the falls. On the western edge of the present falls you can see the deeper channel beginning to cut into the rock.
