From the mid- 19th C and early part of 20th century, this was an extensive Railway Works; where carriages and rolling stock were built, and engines serviced, modified or re-built.
The Carriage Works were exclusivly owned by and supported the S & D Railway's needs.
Along with brickmaking, the railway(s) - (S & D, and GWR) - were the major employers in Highbridge.
