Basilica built by the Crusaders in 1123 AC on a place that had a religious tradition since the Greek period (it is said that the Apostle St. Peter preached at this place), it became one of the most beautiful religious buildings of the period of the crusaders. Destroyed by Salah ad Din in 1188, the basilica was reconstructed end of the 12th century, later in islamic times, it was more and more neglected or used as stables or barracks. In 1851 it was converted into a mosque. Today the basilica is part of the museum of Tartus.
