The original "Melody Road" Shibetsu-Town 「メロディーロード」 (Shibetsu)

Grooves are cut into the asphalt at specific intervals so that while driving over them automobile tires will produce a melody.

The concept was created by a Mr. Shinoda, working with the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute.

This apparently was the "proof of concept" stretch that was cut into a lightly traveled road among rice patties.

"Melody Roads" are now located in the provinces of Hokkaido, Wakayama and Gunma, and are up to 320 meters (2 tenths of a mile) stretches of the host road.
