  • UDIRIPIKONDA A. Approach : It is situated at a distance of 34 kms, to the north-west ,of Anantapur on the Anantapur-Bellary Road, It can be reached by bus. B- Topography : It Is surrounded by cultivable lands of red soil. C, Historicity : According to local information, the village Is named after the ruler Udarappa, who constructed a fort on the hill top, According to Mackenzie manuscripts the village wa$ the strong hold of Palegars who had the support of the Vijayanagara rulers. D, Antiquarian Remains ; a Meaolithlc Site : A Mesolithic site is noticed on the southern bank of a perennial stream 'Marri Vanka', where flakes, blades and finished microliths are collected, b. Temples : I Basaveswara temple : It Is a modern temple situated in the midst of the village. The flat roofed shrine consists of a sanctum and a mandapa. * II. Anjaneyaswamy temple : It is situated In the eastern corner of the village. The flat roofed shrine consists of a garbhagriha and a mandapa. III. Ellamma temple : It is situated Inside the second fortification wall on" the hill. The flat roofed shrine consists of a sanctum and a mancfapa. Presently two female heads In black stone, 125 " DIRECTORY OF MONUMENTS " (Anantapur District) wearing kirita and ear pendants, are placed in the sanctum for worship, On the basis of its architectural features it may be assigned to late Vijayanagara period. iv. Chennakesavaswamy temple : It is situated on the top of the hilt inside the third fortification wall. It consists of a sanctum, an antarala and a mandapa* It is in dilapidated condition, No idol is found in the sanctum, c. Hill Fort : A fort with a bastion is noticed on the hill top, While ascending the hill, three fortification walls are found one after the other with three entrance gateways. The first entrance gate measures 4.00 x 1.78 mts. The second entrance gateway is noticed at a distance of 30 mts. from the first gateway, it measures 4,00 x 1,80 mts, The height of the fortification wall is 4 mts. The fortification wall on the west and the eastern sides is In dilapidated condition. The fort is built with dressed stones. Some cavities found in the fortification suggest that guns and similar weapons were kept. The fort seems to belong to the late medieval period. Two inscriptions of 17th century in Telugu-Kannada script are found on a boulder near the fort. d. Bastion : It is found Inside the second fortification wall towards east of fort, The bastion is built with dressed stones and filled with mud, Its height is 4,50 mts and circumference is 31 mts. e. Loose sculptures ; A standing woman (90 x 75 cms,) In an/a// posture is found at the entrance of the village.
