The Welwyn Viaduct, also called Digswell Viaduct is a famous viaduct over the River Mimram and a locally important landmark.
It was originally opened by Queen Victoria on 6 August 1850, and remains in use today.

  • The big problem is that it only has two tracks on the mostly four-tracked East Coast Main Line, which makes it an annoying bottleneck. It is also very old and historic, making it difficult to widen.
  • Hang on - I've got an idea. Build a new viaduct to the East that runs alongside it. Make it so that the southbound tracks (both local and fast) go across the new viaduct and route the northbound tracks so that they go over the old viaduct.
