Fort Ruby was established in 1862 during the Civil War to protect the stage and telegraph facilities from indian attacks.from 1859 - 1862 the station was an important location on the Pony Express, The Central Overland Stage Line, and and the first Trans-Continental telegraph line. The Fort Ruby Ranch was established in 1865 and functioned through1869. The ranch provided grain and supplies to travelers. Soldiers from Fort Ruby Ridge were involved in the Goshute War. The fort was occupied until 1869 when the transcontinental stage came to an end.

All that remains of the fort today are two wooden structures: A log cabin and the post office. They are amid modern structures on the ranch. The site of the Pony Express station is three miles to the east of this station.

A 1992 fire destroyed two of the four landmarked structures, an enlisted men's barracks and the officer's quarters, and its status as a landmark is under review.
