Hood College is a co-educational liberal arts college. The college serves approximately 936 graduate students and another 1,185 undergraduate students.

It was founded in 1893 as the Woman's College of Frederick by the Potomac Synod of the Reformed Church of the United States. In 1897, the college received a 28-acre tract of land for its campus from Margaret Scholl Hood. In recognition of this, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the college to Hood College in 1912.

Hood was originally a women-only college and did not admit men until 1971 as commuter students. Men began to be admitted on a residential basis in 2003, making the college co-educational.

  • Frederick is full of Civil War history and Hood College campus is certainly not an exception. One of the buildings (not entirely sure which one) was built on top of what used to be a civil war saloon. They say if you hang around late at night, you can hear cheers, whoops, shouts, chatter and footsteps.
