When the Pennsylvania R.R. built the current crossing, this bridge was given to the State of Maryland and used for many years as a highway bridge, and was dismantled when the current Route 40 crossing was built. Because it was built as a railroad bridge it was too narrow for two lanes of highway and a second deck was added: northbound cars passed under the southbound cars on the upper deck.
