railway, historical layer / disappeared object

This was the site of the Southern RR depot in Athens. Look closely and you can still make out where the Y track that led into the station was located. Tracks leading to the south past the UGA campus belonged to the Central of Georgia Railway, leading eventually to Macon via Madison and Monticello. Northbound tracks belonged to the Southern, leading to the Atlanta-Charlotte mainline at Lula, GA. Southern stopped using the depot sometime in the early 1970s.
