University of Malaya
The , formed in 1998, started off as a Department of Mathematics in 1959 and was one of the pioneering departments in the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya. It is also an institute of study in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as the Faculty of Education, and services the Faculty of Engineering. The Institute is today one of the largest mathematical institutes in Malaysia.
Currently, our Institute has 41 academic staff comprising of 8 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 24 Senior Lecturers, 2 Lecturers and 1 Senior Research Fellow. We have about 400 undergraduate students and 80 postgraduate students who are currently enrolled.
Our Institute offers four undergraduate and three postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate programmes are the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics), Bachelor of Science (Industrial and Computational Mathematics), Bachelor of Science (Statistics) and Bachelor of Science (Actuarial and Financial Mathematics). The postgraduate programmes consist of the Master of Science in Statistics (by coursework), Master of Science (by research) and Doctor of Philosophy (by research).
As a research university, the academic staff are active in various mathematical research fields such as graph theory, algebra, complex analysis, operation research, partial differential equations, time series analysis, probabilistic distribution theory, bioinformatics and financial economics. A Center of Mathematical and Statistical Modelling has also been established since 2008. Various research activities such as seminars, workshops and academic visits are carried out to enhance the research atmosphere between local and international collaborators.
