US Army Air Corps/US Air Force strategic heavy bomber aircraft, displayed in the markings of the "Great Artiste", a Second World War B-29 which served as the photographic platform and chase plane for both the "Enola Gay" and "Bocks Car" as they carried out their nuclear bombing missions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in August 1945.

Though the actual "Great Artiste" was destroyed in September 1949 during a crash landing at Goose Bay Air Base, Labrador, this Korean War-era SB-29 has assumed its identity and has been on display at the Whiteman AFB "Spirit Gate" since 1991.

Comments

  • This is the "Great Artiste", photo escort for the Hiroshima Atomic bomb mission.
  • Used to be at Pease AFB in Portsmouth, NH.
  • The Great Artiste crashed and was scrapped in the late 40's in Labrador. This was a Korean War B-29 that was painted to look like it. http://www.whiteman.af.mil/photos/index.asp?galleryID=5193
