A toll bar stood here between 1762, when the current A683 was constructed, and 1874, when the maintenance of the road was vested in the County Council. The house was then offered for sale for £50, but there seem to have been no takers, and nothing now remains. A Quaker Meeting house formerly stood just to the north of the toll gate.
