Here stood William Beckford's fantasy house where he lived a reclusive life, surrounded by fake gothic splendour. It was here that Nelson and Emma Hamilton dined. After ploughing one of England's biggest private fortunes into this cement-coated palace, Beckford was forced to sell up in 1822. The central tower, built to rival that of nearby Salisbury Cathedral, collapsed 3 years later, taking much of the house with it. The small remnant still standing is a private house and not accessible to the public.
