Plum Island -- "Alcatraz for Animal Disease"

Fort Terry was established in 1898. Designated in honor of Maj. Gen. Alfred H. Terry, who commanded the successful attack on Fort Fisher, NC, in 1865 and commanding general of the ill-fated Centennial Campaign against the Sioux in June 1876.

Formerly home to the 6th–9th Companies, Coast Defenses of Long Island Sound from 1919 to 1922, and elements of 11th Coast Artillery.

All of the Endicott era batteries were no longer being used by the end of the Second World War. Two batteries, 217 and AMTB 911, were constructed during WWII. Fort Terry also acted as a training camp and supply depot for submarines during the war, and temporary demobilization center for troops returning home. The US Army abandoned Fort Terry in 1946 and declared it surplus in 1948.

In December 2008, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has recommended Kansas as the site for a new high-security animal disease lab, a decision that could eventually close Long Island's Plum Island Animal Disease Center.
