In July 1996, four German tourists, a man, woman, and two boys, drove into this canyon where their car broke down. The car was found in October 1996 but the tourists were not found until 2009, when the remains of at least the two adults were discovered. The temperature was about 120 degrees in July.

  • There was a flag which was found in the vehicle that had been stolen from the Geologists camp which was about 5 miles away..
  • The tourists' remains were eventually found in 2009, about 8-9 miles away from where their car was found. The search and rescue story has been put on paper by one of the key contributors and can be read here: http://www.otherhand.org/home-page/search-and-rescue/the-hunt-for-the-death-valley-germans/
  • I worked for a mining outfit in the eighties in goler canyon in the panimints as a surveyer, this is no place to go without being properly prepared. On my days off i would roam all around butte valley. I still live in the area and still people don't heed the warnings not to go to these areas unless you are prepared and know what you are doing, People this place will kill you even if you know what you're doing. there is a pass going into butte valley called mengel pass and buried there is an old miner who lived there who knew the area, he died from a broken leg. Remember if you go tell someone where you are going and when you will be back and come out alive with amazing stories, don't become a story.
  • Here's the full story. If you want to go anywhere round here, you need to knwo what you're doing and be seriously prepared.
