The Cold Spring jetties were constructed to protect the entrance to Cape May Harbor from encroaching sand. While the jetties did ultimately protect the harbor and keep it navigable, they also interrupted the natural, littoral flow of sand. Sand-rich currents are trapped on the northeastern side of the jetty, slowly building the beaches there, while sand-starved currents on the southwestern side of the jetty tear down beaches. The effect is obvious in any photo.
