Stóra Dímun

The smallest inhabited island among the Faroe Islands, located in the south part of archipelago. It has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because of its significance as a breeding site for sea-birds, especially petrels, puffins and guillemots. Stóra Dímun was probably inhabited in Vikings Age and it's mentioned in Færeyinga Saga. In the Middle Ages at least seven families lived there and there were a church, which footing might be still seen. Currently island is inhabited by two families in one farm. It can only be reached by helicopter.
