military, Minuteman, historical layer / disappeared object, missile silo
The former LF for a LGM-30F Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Nicknamed "Gun" by its crews, Mike Eight was manned by elements of the 510th Strategic Missile Squadron, 351st Missile Wing, formerly based at Whiteman AFB outside Knob Noster, Missouri. Though it originally housed an LGM-30B Minuteman I ICBM in 1964, these were replaced with the Minuteman II from May 1966 to October 1967. It remained on alert until the early 1990's when the Air Force began retiring the LGM-30F from service beginning in December of 1991 and wrapping up in July 1995. The vacant Launch Facilities were left to be imploded and filled in.
