  • MARA Technology University(UiTM), an institute born to Malay nationalism, has abolished the century-old east court of the Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement, on October 2007. Though the place has been evaluated and highly regarded by some heritage researchers as world heritage, UiTM vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah said the buildings had no historical or heritage value. The heritage was torn down to build UiTM's medical faculty.
  • Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement(SBLS), established on 15th August, 1930, is located at Selangor State, Peninsular Malaysia. It was the largest and most well equipped leprosy asylum and research center among the Commonwealth Countries of the British Colony. It was the idea of Dr. Travers, who proposed a policy of building up a “self-sustainable community”, on a Tropical Medicine Conference in Singapore, 1923, to improve the living conditions of those people who acquired leprosy. A green basin, 25km distant from Kuala Lumpur city, surrounded by forest and rivers, was then sought as an ideal place. The weather and environment was good enough to make a natural healthcare resort. According to Traver’s idea, though lepers was supposed to be quarantined by law, they should not be treated as prisoners. Thus, the community concept that he proposed was fenceless, catered for the physiological and psychological needs for the patients, so that the latter can live normal life in the leprosy settlement as they used to live in the outside world.
