Criccieth castle's construction began under the reign of Llywelyn the Great in about 1230. Strategically located on a rocky promontory jutting into Tremadog Bay, the castle was a focal point in the war between England and Wales — eventually it was captured by Edward I during his second campaign in North Wales (1282-1283).

Criccieth is notable for its twin-towered gatehouse, rare among Welsh-built castles.
