Called Shades by the DNR, the Native Shawnee had a different name for the area
"Shades of Death"
Depending on the legend you believe it was either because;
A) It was the site of a bloody inter-tribal ambush and the spirits of the dead warriors remained.
B) The stone palisades and pine woods harbored dark spiritual energy.
C) It was haunted by the spirits of those who drowned in Sugar Creek.
It remains a little-known gem in the IN state park system.
