Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno.
Serra San Bruno takes its origin from the coming of the hermit from the Grande Chartreuse in France, to the heart of Calabria in 1091. The original name was Torre dell'altipiano until the fourteenth century, when, at the time of Ferdinand I of Aragon (1375 - 1416), changed to Serra, who after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy it was desired to add the epithet of "San Bruno" to describe better the Calabrian town and especially as expressions of gratitude and filial devotion to the Founder and Father of Carthusian House.

When he reached San Bruno in Calabria, the generous Conte Ruggero offered an area in the place called Torre, between Arena and Stilo, about 850 meters above sea level and located far from any town.

Here Bruno founded the hermitage of Santa Maria, while a little less than 2 km further downstream - where now stands the Monastery - was built after the monastery of Santo Stefano.

On 6 October 1101 Bruno died and was buried in Santa Maria in the cemetery of the hermits.
