Founded in 1927, it was one of the area’s earliest attempts by women to social, civic and cultural progress. It is no longer restricted to women, and is available to the public at large for weddings and other occasions and provides beautiful accommodations. It is an active social organization in the Berkeley community. It is both a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) by virtue of its Gothic Revival-influenced Bay Area architecture. The building was designed by Julia Morgan, an architect best known for her work on the Hearst Castle.
