University Preparatory Academy’s mission is to prepare a diverse population of 7-12th grade students in the central San Jose and surrounding neighborhoods to enter and excel in the best colleges and universities in the nation, with the training to assume leadership positions in their community. San Jose lacks quality programs for the average performing and academically challenged students who ultimately fall between the cracks.

Our objective is to enroll all students who are motivated and have a dream of going to a 4-year university and graduating with a 4-year degree. Especially those students who may be under supported, overlooked, or under challenged in a large school environment, and would thrive in a highly intensive, supportive, and interpersonal environment.UPA’s overall vision is to empower the community through powerful teaching and learning and to provide the students with the core academic and life learning skills to enable them to be positive, successful contributors to the community.

UPA founding team members include public school administrators with over 100 combined years experience operating education programs, community leaders and lifelong residents of the school’s planned location, and a business professional with significant financial management experience.

High student academic achievement is critical to the success of UPA’s program. UPA will offer an intensive college preparatory program in a small school environment integrating academics and performing arts, advisory/leadership, and technology as tools to actualize the unique skills and talents of each student. UPA will be a high-quality, dynamic school that provides students with a new version of the Three R’s: rigorous academic coursework; meaningful relationships with instructors who can help students meet high standards; and relevant learning opportunities through internships and community partnerships.

UPA is planning to open in the fall of 2007 with 7th – 9th Grade with an expected enrollment of 192 total students, adding a grade each subsequent year to a maximum population of 384 students.

Technology will be integrated into the curriculum to ensure that students have the skills necessary for success in academics and daily life in the 21st Century. The integration of technology in the core subjects as well as art, music and theater provides the opportunity for results-oriented student work.
UPA will organize as a tax-exempt, California non-profit Public Benefit Corporation.
