Incorporated in 1827, the township has a population of 19,020 as of the 2000 census. It measures approximately 36 square miles; its southern and northern boundaries are 26 and 32 Mile Roads, respectively, and its western and eastern boundaries are Dequindre and Hayes Roads.
Washington Township contains part of the village of Romeo at its northern edge.
