The earliest services for this Anglican community were in 1905 – held at the Ipoh Court House (near the Birch Clock Tower). Services were held monthly and in 1906 the Chaplaincy of South Perak was inaugurated. As the congregation grew, there was a need for a more permanent building. The church was then built at this site at the cost of $20,000 in December 1910. It was officially opened on 30th April 1912.

During the Japanese Invasion, this church was regarded as enemy target and was subsequently bombed, though not heavily damaged, the explosion shattered the glass panels at the high altar and the church's bell tower was blown away to the ground. Later, during Occupation, it was converted to a noodle factory. The Japanese officials occupied the vicarage. The church was also looted thus loosing many valuable items. It re-opened at the end of occupation on 23rd September 1945.
