Collège du Mont ["College of the Mount"] (Listed building) (Caen)

France / Basse-Normandie / Caen

This college was founded in the 15th century by an abbot of Mont Saint-Michel ["St Michael's Mount"]. It was run by Jesuits between 1608/09 and 1762. The college became part of the University of Caen, before finally closing its doors in 1803.
The building was subsequently occupied by the Prefecture until 1854. A part of the building was then used as a small museum for the Société des Antiquaires de Normandie ["Society of Antiquaries of Normandy"]; this was the only part of the Collège du Mont to survive bombing in World War II. After the War, a large part of the Society's collections were transferred to the new Musée de Normandie ["Museum of Normandy"], which was founded in the Logis des Gouverneurs ["Governors' Lodge"] in the castle.
