This high school was founded in 1804 in the convent building of the Abbaye aux Hommes ["Men's Abbey"]. It was named Lycée de Caen ["Caen High School"] or Lycée Impérial ["Imperial High School"], then Collège Royal ["Royal College"] and finally Lycée Malherbe ["Malherbe High School"].

In 1961, the high school moved into new purpose-built premises on Avenue Albert Sorel, where it has remained since.
