Khandallah Park was set aside as a reserve in 1909 and is one of the city’s oldest parks. In the 1800s, most of the forest was burnt off and cut down to create farmland and it has been regenerating ever since. The main trees forming the forest canopy are kohekohe and māhoe, with rewarewa, tawa, hinau and pukatea emerging through. Over time, assisted by the restoration efforts of the Council and volunteers, we will see the return of magnificent trees like mātai, miro, kahikatea, totara and rātā. Volunteer trapping programme is run by human+nature which covers over 170 hectors of the reserve trapping predators such as rats, stoats, weasels. Native birds in the reserve include Tūī, Kākāriki, Kererū, Bellbird, Kaka along with many other smaller natives. http://humannature.kiwi.nz/
