Site of Milburn House (Buffalo, New York)

USA / New York / Buffalo / Buffalo, New York / Delaware Avenue, 1168
historical building, historical layer / disappeared object

The Milburn House, a private home owned at one time by prominent lawyer and New York City Bar Association President John Milburn, gained fame following the September 6th, 1901 shooting of President William McKinley at the Pan-American Exhibition.

Offering the use of his home for the convalescing President and his staff, Milburn House became a hive of activity during the next few days as the majority of McKinley's Cabinet and Vice President Roosevelt came to see the President. McKinley would remained in Milburn House under constant care for the next eight days until he succumbed to his wounds on September 16th, 1901.

Following the Presidents death, Milburn House became something of a tourist attraction and remained so, eventually being used as a hotel. The hotel operated until 1957 before going out of business, at which time the aging structure was razed by the City of Buffalo to allow expansion of the neighboring Canisius High School.

President McKinley was shot at the Pan American Exposition north of this site but died in the Milburn residence at this location days later. This location now houses the student parking lot of Canisius High School.

The actual site of the shooting was north of Delaware Park, where Fordham Drive is now.

Klad is correct. There is a monument on Fordham, marking the spot.
