Originally established around 1860 by a man named George Padleford, it was later sold to James Pawley Raine around May 1868 or 1876, depending on which source you read. His son, Robert Franklin Raine, was running the ranch in 1922 where he was operating an illegal still.

Raine and his hired man, John Brite, were involved in a deadly shooting with federal agents ("revenuers") in which agent Nick Carter was shot twice in the leg and eventually died on Christmas Eve when sepsis set in. Raine and Brite were charged with murder but later acquitted of that charge. Raine was also charged with knowing about the still, making liquor, and having materials that could be used to make liquor. Though Raine was acquitted of two out of four Prohibition charges, he served jail time for the other two.

W.R. Rand (of nearby Rand Ranch) purchased the ranch in August 1929.
