Roche Abbey: Monks' Refectory

The building where the abbey would communally take meals, accompanied by readings from the scriptures. The orientaion of the refectory on a north-south axis is an indicator that Roche was a Cistercian house: in a particularly literal interpretation of St Benedict's Rule, the Cistercian's often attached the abbey kitchen to the cloister whereas, in other communities, it would have been a separate building (in order to lessen the dangers of an accidental fire). To make space for the kitchen, the refectory was changed from the otherwise usual west-east orientation to one of north-south.
